I know it's still only July, but school clothes are on my mind! Since Nimby loves clothes, shoes, and accessories, every year we do a back to school fashion show to showcase her fabulous outfits! Last year we had like 27 different outfits and I spent next to nothing on them. This year will be no exception, as most of her wardrobe will be handmade by me! Since she's really into shoes, that's where I usually splurge. Knowing that she likes to have a LOT of options for shoes, that could really blow the budget. However, since she'll have so many to cycle through, they won't get as much wear, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to go low end for a few pairs and fancify them ourselves. I decided to glitterize a crappy pair of mine to test out the technique and they came out PERFECT!
You'll Need:
pair of shoes (can be ballet flats, pumps, strappy heels, etc)
Mod Podge (seriously I use this stuff for everything!)
glitter (I bought two sample packs that had 2 grams of each color)
a 1/2" - 1" art paint brush
Knowing that dry glitter is the bane of my existence (It's the Herpes of craft supplies - the gift that just keeps on giving!) I decided to mix the glue and glitter instead of dumping dry glitter on top of the painted on glue. I figured it would also cut down on my shoes shedding glitter everywhere! I mixed equal parts Mod Podge and glitter. (I used both gold packets from my sample packs, totalling 4 grams of glitter!) Even though I hate gold, the color was calling to me so I went with it.
The first coat. The glue doesn't have to be dry to apply another coat, but definitely wait until the cloudiness fades and the Mod Podge looks more clear.
Second coat. The glue takes a bit longer to clear with each coat, but if you work the shoes in sections, you're always painting something.
Fourth coat - hooray! Immediately wash your brush and leave the shoes to dry overnight.
I love, love, love them! I'm going to make a pair in every shade of the sample glitter pack I bought!!!! The best part is that the glitter stays put. I even tried to scratch it off and scuff it on pavement and it's really durable!
I can't wait to make myself some ruby slippers!
