Our Joann's Fabric in Kingston is going out of business. I went in yesterday to scope out the selection. Since everything was only 30%-50% off, I didn't stock up on too much, but I did want to share what I did get.
I'm always drooling over the fabric in the custom orders section, but because they are so pricey I can hardly ever justify the splurge. Well, since they are no longer taking custom orders, all of those samples are being sold for just $2 each!!! I told myself I wouldn't use that as an excuse to clean them out, but I wound up buying a ton of them anyway! Why pay $2 for such a small piece of fabric? Well first off, some of those fabrics can run you $49.99 a yard or more, so a 15" square for $2 is still a great deal. Another reason they are worth the $2? They are the perfect size to make so many things!
Here are a few ideas:
(2) squares sewn together make a gorgeous decorative pillow
Each square is big enough to cover most outdoor chair seats! Since they are samples you won't find four or six that are identical, but you can find identical prints in several colors or identical colors in different prints, either way they will look great!
You can easily get two pairs of baby shoes per square! The selection of the samples is insane- suede, leather, corduroy, chiffon, etc., so the possibilities for the shoes are limitless!
(You can also get one pair of adult shoes per square.)
You can make massive amounts of hair accessories, shoe clips, pins, and jewelry with just ONE square!
If you're feeling brave you could use many squares in similar colors (or not!) and create a funky quilt or throw out of them.
You can use them to cover cork squares (or cork circles) to make decorative memo boards.
You can stretch the squares onto embroidering hoops or simple wooden frames to use the fabric as art.
Seriously? I could go on all day!!! My advice to you... Go to Joann's and buy up all the samples that make your heart sing or that are begging you to take them home. I will be posting tutorials and hosting classes that will give them a purpose! Go get them before they're gone and make sure you send me pics of your new stash so I can be jealous... it seriously took everything I had not to buy them all.
